Brainstorming Techniques for Students

Brainstorming is a method students can use to generate ideas for writing a paper. In the process of brainstorming, you should suspend any concerns about staying organized. The goal is to pour your thoughts onto paper without worrying about whether they make sense or how they fit together. Because students have different learning styles, some students will be uncomfortable with the disorganized frenzy of spilling thoughts onto paper. For instance, left brain  dominant  students and sequential thinking students may not benefit from the process if it becomes too cluttered. There are more organized ways to brainstorm, however. For this reason, we’ll explore a few ways to get the same results. Find the one that feels most comfortable to you. Brainstorming for Right Brains Right-brained thinkers are typically comfortable with a variety of shapes, ideas, and patterns. Right brains dont run from chaos. The artistic side of the right brain enjoys the process of creating--and it doesnt really matter whether they start with cluttered ideas or clumps of clay. The right brain may be most comfortable with clustering or mind mapping as a brainstorming method. To get started, you will need a few clean pieces of paper, some tape, and a few colored pens or highlighters. Write your main idea or topic in the middle of the paper.Start writing down thoughts in no particular pattern. Write words or passages that pertain to your main idea in some way.Once youve exhausted the random thoughts that come into your head, start using prompters like who, what, where, when, and why. Do any of these prompters generate more words and ideas?Consider whether prompters like opposites or comparisons would be relevant to your topic.Dont worry about repeating yourself. Just keep writing!If your paper gets full, use the second sheet. Tape it to the edge of your original paper.Keep attaching pages as necessary.Once you have emptied your brain, take a short break from your work.When you return with a fresh and rested the mind, glance over your work to see what kinds of patterns emerge.Youll notice that some thoughts are related to others and some thoughts are repeated. Draw yellow circles around the thoughts that are related. The yellow ideas will become a subtopic.Draw blu e circles around other related ideas for another subtopic. Continue this pattern.Dont worry if one subtopic has ten circles and another has two. When it comes to writing your paper, this simply means you may write several paragraphs about one idea and one paragraph about another. Thats OK.Once you finish drawing circles, you may want to number your individual colored circles in some sequence. You now have a basis for a paper! You can turn your wonderful, messy, chaotic creation into a well-organized paper. Brainstorming for Left Brains If the process above makes you break out into a cold sweat, you may be a left brain. If you arent comfortable with chaos and you need to find a more orderly way to brainstorm, the bullet method might work better for you. Put the title or topic of your paper at the head of your paper.Think of three or four categories that would serve as subtopics. You can start by thinking about how you could break best down your topic into smaller sections. What sort of features could you use to divide it? You could consider time periods, ingredients, or sections of your subject matter.Write down each of your subtopics, leaving a few inches of space between each item.Make bullets under each subtopic. If you find you need more space than youve provided under each category, you can transfer your subtopic to a new sheet of paper.Dont worry about the order of your subjects as you write; you will put them into order once you have exhausted all your ideas.Once you have emptied your brain, take a short break from your work.When you return with a fresh and rested the mind, glance over your work to see what kinds of patterns emerge.Number your main ideas so they create a flow of information.You have a rough outline for your p aper! LAND USE Three quarter of the Blue planet is covered with water and the 6 billion people around the world live on the remaining land surface, which is approximately 140 million km?. For several decades, owing to the rising world population, our land resources are constantly under pressure to supply the increasing demand for the basic needs. Our land resources are fragile and non-renewable. They include soil for agriculture; land cover for the environment and landscapes which are important for human habitat and wellbeing. Since 1945, an estimated 1. 2 billion hectares of land worldwide have been moderately or strongly degraded as a result of human activity, implying that its productivity has been significantly reduced. Human activities can produce a diverse range of both harmful and beneficial impacts on the quality of land. Agriculture is one example; whilst it can lead to soil erosion, salination of soils through irrigation, and nutrient depletion, on the other hand it may also act as a sink for greenhouse gases, and prevent flooding and landslides if good management practices are applied. The effects on the environment of land use are usually complex especially in a country like Mauritius where agricultural practices are confined to mono culture dominance: e. g. sugar cane. Mauritius is a densely populated small island developing state with a limited high quality area of land (out of total area of 185,000 ha) suitable for effective development. This natural resource is therefore, under high pressure due to increasing demand for development by the various sectors of the economy. Mauritius is one of the most densely populated, agricultural islands in the world having 16% built-up space and growing at a rate of 1000 ha of residential space every year. The island of Mauritius covers some 186 500 ha of land of which 43% or 84 000 ha is estimated to be under agriculture. Of this proportion, some 77 000 ha or 39% of total land mass is under sugar cane. Other significant land uses include forest and shrubs (estimated at 57 000 ha or 30%) and built development including roads and utilities (about 43 000 ha or 26%) (Source: National Development strategy, 2003) Management of land resources in Mauritius is presently at the cross-roads. Focus on the following policies; have been emphasized in the future land management strategies: †¢ Judicious use of land by avoiding incompatible land uses. †¢ Awareness on self-regulating measures by different land demanding authorities †¢ Well planned strategy on tourism development in light of limited eco-tourist landscape and coastal land resource. Adoption of principle of common sharing amongst all utility authorities and to provide different services in a rational manner. Tourism Sector – Hotels Construction Tourism, third pillar of the economy after the E. P. Z. manufacturing sector and Agriculture, contributes significantly to economic growth and has been a key factor in the overall development of Mauritius. In the past two decades tourist arrivals increased at an average annual rate of 9 % with a corresponding increase of about 21% in tourism receipts. In 2000, gross tourism receipts were 14. 2 billion rupees (508. 3 million US $) and contributed to about 11 % of our GDP. The National Tourism Policy emphasizes low impact, high spending tourism. Selective, up-market, quality tourism is favoured, and although such tourism is not the only type, it constitutes the major segment of our tourists who stay in high class hotels. In 1997, there were 87 hotels with a total capacity of 6,800 rooms and 14,100 bedplates. With the construction of new hotels, this will facilitate accommodation of new visitors, thus creating new employments Integrated Resort Scheme: A good example of innovative thinking on the part of policy makers in Mauritius was the introduction of the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS) a few years ago. Under this scheme, non-Mauritian individuals or companies are entitled to purchase luxury villas and other residential properties on the island. The property owners then receive a residence permit (and consequently the tax benefits associated with living in Mauritius). Properties under this scheme are sold at a minimum price of USD 500 000. Aside from the injection of foreign capital and the immigration of skilled business people to Mauritius, the programme has provided a very welcome boost to the construction industry (and consequently employment) in the country. According to Sewraj Nundlall, assistant director, of Manufacturing Agri-Business Energy and Environment at the Board of Investment of Mauritius (BOI), 20 projects with an investment potential of around Rs 100 billion have already been approved. International property developers from UK, South Africa, and France have been investing in the projects and over 300 villas have already been sold out. The majority of the buyers come from France, UK, India and South Africa. One company which has very successfully marketed properties under this scheme is Pam Golding Properties. Jonathan Tagg, managing director of Pam Golding Properties in Mauritius says, the first IRS [the Tamarina Golf Estate and Beach Club development] is sold out. We are currently involved with an IRS development called Matala and with villas starting at USD 850 000 we have seen good sales and we expect that should take around one year to be sold out. When questioned about the effects of the global economic crisis on sales he said the market has slowed down from the highs of 2007 and early 2008 but we continue to see clients investing in Mauritius where there is little supply and property prices continue to climb. We feel the market will take another 18 months to two years to reach the highs of 2004 2007 where sales moved very quickly but we are optimistic that sales will continue to be steady. The IRS has been so successful that the government has innovated further and subsequently introduced the Real Estate Scheme, which unlike other government schemes designed to encourage inward investment, sets no minimum purchase price for foreign buyers. Agricultural Sector At the time of independence in 1968, Mauritius inherited a monocrop economy based on sugarcane. The country had to spend a large part of the revenue obtained from the export of sugar to import its food requirements, mainly rice, flour, pulses, chicken, beef, onions and milk products. However, apart from flour, all the other food items mentioned could be produced partly or even totally in Mauritius. Thus, imports could be reduced and foreign exchange saved. For this reason, the government decided to diversity our agriculture. Agricultural diversification in Mauritius Agriculture diversification means: producing crops and livestock that were not being produced so far †¢ producing crops and livestock, other than the main ones in larger quantities. In Mauritius, the government decided that diversification should not be at the expense of sugarcane, i. e. sugarcane should not be replaced, even partly. But other crops such as potatoes and maize and livestock should be produced in larger quantities and new crops introduced (e. g. anthurium). The government offered a number of ince ntives to farmers to ensure the success of the diversification programme: †¢ agricultural credit, i. e. inancial loans from bank †¢ a subsidy on the price of certain commodities †¢ a guaranteed price was offered for some commodities †¢ facilities were made available to livestock breeders. After nearly 20 years, it can be said that Mauritius has succeeded in a certain measure in its diversification program. Today the country is more than 33 % self-sufficient in its food requirements. Mauritius has derived many advantages from its agricultural diversification programs. These advantages are: †¢ imports have been reduced and foreign currencies saved †¢ employment has been created our dependence on sugar has been reduced †¢ the country has become self-sufficient in certain commodities †¢ new crops help to earn additional foreign currencies. When a country depends too much on one single crop, it runs certain risks. If the crop is severely affected b y adverse weather conditions, pests and diseases or low market prices, the country may face an economical crisis. RENEWABLE ENERGY Shifting to renewable energy is becoming more more important for Mauritius as we are very much dependent on imported petroleum products. As per latest statistics (Source – www. gov. mu ) in year 2007 Mauritius produced 82% of its energy from Petroleum products or coal which are imported. This has a very heavy burden on the Mauritian Economy as very high imports of fuel have a negative effect on the Balance of Trade. Moreover, as the international reserves in petroleum products is expected to be depleted in a few decades, the price of petroleum products is expected to rise drastically in the future predicting more and more pressure on the Mauritian economy. Apart from the economic aspects, there is also the ecological issue, we are all concerned with global warming and its consequences, being an island Mauritius is amongst the first countries affected by the rising sea level. All the above concerns have made the Mauritian Government engage in increasing the share of renewable and local sources in our energy production. Bagasse energy With the help of incentives from the Government, the Sugarcane industry has engaged in the diversification of its activities to use bagasse together with coal for the cogeneration of electricity. There has been the centralisation of activities to a few major factories who use bagasse and coal for energy production , theses units have an agreement with the Central Electricity Board which allows them to sell all energy produced in excess of their own use to the CEB at a predefined rate. The firms in the sugarcane industry are allowed to raise tax free debentures for the generation of electricity from bagasse and the modernisation of their factories. These firms who invested in such systems were entitled to refund of export duty payable. All these incentives have increased production of electricity with bagasse making it the number one source of local and renewable energy at nearly 17% of electricity production in 2007. The action plan for 2006 to 2015 (Source – Sugarcane for energy production in the future by Dr G Rajpati, Executive Director, Mauritius Sugar Authority, July 2006) is to fully tap the energy potential of the sugarcane plant. This includes doubling the production of electricity from bagasse from 300 GWh to 600 GWh, for this research is being carried out for the production of higher fibre cane.

Well, its finally here. After an entire summer filled with its reality TV show, Rock Star Supernova released their debut album. All the ingredients are correct rock veterans Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke, and Jason Newsted and their hand-picked singer, Lukas Rossi, who has a distinct style. Its a great combination. So can someone please explain why this is a train wreck? The album starts with â€Å"Its On.† Good title, it hints at some sort of fighting anthem where skulls are a crackin. The instruments are pretty solid and relatively fast, but the vocals are just Rossi howling for three minutes. During the TV show, he was criticized for not having enough range. Well, apparently he wants to prove he does. â€Å"Leave the Lights On† debuted on the TV show and was sung by a female contestant so hearing the official version is a hard adjustment. Rossi is essentially talking, but manages to shine during the chorus. Ushered in by â€Å"Its All Love,† Rossi starts to sound like the man the audiences loved over the summer. The song crawls along but has a catchy tune and Rossis signature sound gives it an edge wait! Guitar solo. Okay, continue. â€Å"Cant Bring Myself to Light This Fuse† is a disaster. Rossi sounds like a little girl, the piano is almost as laughable as Rossis voice, and the lyrics are pathetic. Can this really come from a band that has members of Metallica in it? They picked a good song to follow that disaster â€Å"Underdog.† Clarke is trying to steal the show, of course, and its hard to pick out the surprisingly great bass line. Lees drumming is pretty unremarkable but here Rossi is amazing. He shows his gritty side and is able to swing into a high register seamlessly without sounding ridiculous. The saving grace of the entire album is â€Å"Social Disgrace,† for which Clarke actually gets some props for having an exquisite guitar riff. Rossi employs the same vocal tactic as â€Å"Underdog,† where he sings low then swings into a higher voice, showing that hes not just a gruff mumble-mouth like he was on the show. Rejoice SNL lovers, Lee gives us more cowbell! Its a little odd, but the bell does make an impression. Then comes the slap in the face. For some reason, a church choir starts singing on the last song. Why theyre there is anyones guess because the song is called â€Å"The Dead Parade† and is about people who go their own way. Dumb lyrics return, with a melodramatic wailing of â€Å"my life is a roller coaster!† Shut up. Clarke remembers that its the last song on the album, so he smashes on for a minute of extra nonsense. Rossi sounds good despite the moronic lyrics, and Lee does a great job, just like on every other song on the album. â€Å"Rock Star Supernova† is one of those albums that must be listened to several times for the artistry to be appreciated. At face value, it sounds like some commercial romp for a bunch of has-been rockers and one guy who desperately wants to be rich and famous. But in a society that worships fast food and fast cash, who has time to listen to the same thing over and over again just to start liking it?

Evolution The theory of evolution by natural selection was first put forth by Charles Darwin in his book, â€Å" on the origin of species†, in 1859. In 1930’s Darwinian natural selection was combined with Mendelian inheritance to form the modern evolutionary synthesis. With its enormous explanatory power, this theory provides a unifying answer to diversity of life on earth. Evolution is the change in a population’s inherited traits, from generation to generation. These traits are encoded as genes that are copied and passed on to offspring during reproduction. Mutations and other random changes in the genes can produce new or altered traits, resulting in difference between organisms. Evolution occurs when these different traits become more common or rare in a population. This happens through genetic drift and is based on the reproductive value of traits through natural selection. Under natural selection organisms with traits that help them to survive and reproduce tend to have more off springs. In doing so, they will pass more copies of inheritable beneficial traits on to the next generation. This leads to advantageous traits becoming more common in each generation, while disadvantageous traits become rarer. Over time, this process can result in varied adaptations to environmental conditions. As differences in populations accumulate, new species may evolve. All known species have descended from a single ancestral gene pool through this process of gradual divergence. Broadly these models fall into three categories: 1) Those which see religion as social construction 2) Those which see religion as progressing towards higher, objective truth 3) Those which see particular religion as absolute truth Creationism Creationism is the belief that humanity, life, the Earth, and the Universe were entirely created by a supernatural deity, God. His existence is presupposed. The term creationism is often used to describe the belief that creation occurred literally as described in the book ‘ Genesis’, for Christians and the Jews, and in ‘Qur’an’, for Muslims. In Christian context, many creationists adopt a literal interpretation of the Biblical narratives and say that Bible provides a factual account, given from the perspective of only one who was there to witness it at that time: God. Almost all churches teach that God created the Cosmos. Biblical creationism places knowledge of God central in pursuit of knowledge of anything, as everything comes from God. The theory of evolution is backed by scientific proofs and is considered science beyond any doubt. The relationship between religion and science takes many forms as both are extremely broad. They employ different methods and address different questions. The scientific method adopts an objective approach to measure, calculate, and describe the natural, physical, material universe. Religious methods are more subjective, relying on notions about authority, intuition, belief in supernatural, individual experience and ‘reasoned’ observations about life or the universe, or a combination of all these. Science attempts to answer the ‘how’ and ‘ what’ of observable and verifiable phenomena, religion attempts to answer the ‘why’ question of values, morals, and spirituality. Both employ different methods to find answers to different questions. ( Relationship). A noteworthy dissimilarity between the two is that religion has been existing since ages, whereas science is too young. The earliest civilizations of human species have been worshipping a supernatural force, which was later named as ‘God ’ by Christianity and ‘ Allah’ by Islam. The two most popular religions of today’s world may be a few thousand years old only, but the concept of religion is as old as man himself. In opposition, the modern day science is hardly a few hundred years old. All the modern scientific theories and discoveries on which the world is thriving today, occurred after the renaissance era in Europe. There are two distinct views regarding relationship between religion and science. One known as ‘non-overlapping magisteria’, described by Stephen Jay Gould states that both deal with fundamentally separate aspects of human experience and so when each stays within its own domain, they can co-exist peacefully. The other view known as conflict thesis, which is not to the liking of historians but retains popular appeal, holds that science and religion inevitably compete for authority over the nature of reality. Here, religion has been gradually losing a war with science as scientific expressions become more powerful, acceptable and widespread. Its domain is limited to explaining and proving the existence of a common genetic pool from which different species came into existence. It just assumes that there was a pool of genes from which all forms of life have descended. Science assumes that this was the beginning of universe. Religion does have answers to questions which cannot be answered by any scientific theory. All scientific knowledge, if summed up, is like a small drop in an ocean of summed up knowledge offered by all religions on this world. If religion is based on assumptions, even science has assumptions at its base. Evolution is limited to various aspects of life on this planet. For any religion this is a very small chapter in a huge book. Religion not only touches the various aspects of how life developed, but numerous other topics also. As mentioned above, religion is a ‘ way of life’ and hence its perceptions are much broader than the evolution theory, touching the living and the non-living also. Conflicts between religion and evolution arise when religious fundamentalists refuse to accept the scientifically proved facts. This is true for Christian fundamentalists, especially in the United States. They are simply not ready to deviate from the Biblical teachings that God is the creator of all things and He runs the show. They tend to miss one important point that Darwin has never touched the debate on ‘why’ evolution occurred. He has simply found answers to ‘how’ it happened. The authority of God, or for that matter teaching of any religion is never questioned by the theory of evolution. As a matter of fact, there are ample proofs available which convince us that the scientific community also accepts and favors the theory of a super natural power. Writes Lovgren Stefan in his article in National Geographic news, â€Å" Some of history’s greatest scientific minds, including Albert Einstein, were convinced that there is intelligent life behind the universe. Today many scientists say that there is no conflict between their faith and their work†. He further writes, â€Å" the scientific evidence for evolution is overwhelming. Yet, in 2001 Gallup poll, 45% of USA adults said that they believe evolution has played no role in shaping humans. Darwin never said anything about God. Many scientists and theologians maintain that it would be perfectly logical to think that a divine being used evaluation as a method to create the world†. The article further argues , â€Å" there is no way to explain religious faith scientifically. It is hard to envision a test that can tell the difference between the universe created by God, and the one that appeared without God. But why did the universe exist at all ? This is a question which religion is particularly good at answering†. The same article has a report by Ted Sargent, a nano-technology expert at the University of Toronto. â€Å" Even as science progresses in its reductionist fashion moving towards deeper, simpler and more elegant understanding of particles and forces, there will still remain a ‘ why’, at the end. Evolution and creationism The conflict between the believers in evolution theory and creationism is more fierce than that of evolution and religion. This is especially true in the USA where it has become a political controversy. It is a dispute about the origins of Earth, humanity, life, and the universe. The level of support for the evolution theory is overwhelming in the scientific community and the academia, while support for creation based alternatives where evolution does not take place is minimal among secular scientists. Creationists argue that scientific theories are incomplete, incorrect, and inherently flawed due to the infinite regression nature of questions of origins. They argue that if science can provide answers to ‘ what caused the Big Bang ?’ or ‘ what was the nature of first life form ?’ it is likely that answers themselves will be subject to similar kinds of regressive inquiry. They firmly believe that science cannot provide answers to such questions and that their religious discourse is much more complete and more reliable than the naturalistic description provided by science. While creationists point at the limitations of scientific investigations, they intend to point towards the existence of creator God. Skeptics criticize this as ‘God of the gaps argument’. They say that religious argumentation is reduced to a place holder for gaps in human knowledge. One more argument presented is that evolution is a theory and not a fact. This is a result of misconception about the technical meaning of ‘theory’. In common usage, ‘theory’ means hypothesis and unproven assumptions. In science it means ‘ a plausible or scientifically acceptable general principle or body of principles offered to explain phenomena†. Exploring this issue, Stephen Jay Gould wrote, â€Å" Evolution is a theory. It is also a fact, and facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing uncertainty. Facts are the world’s data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts do not go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein’s theory of gravitation replaced that of Newton’s but apples did not suspend themselves from mid –air. And humans evolved from ape-like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin’s proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be disclosed â€Å". Karl Propper gave a new dimension to the debate, by evolving the concept of ‘falsifiability’. He claimed that testable theories are scientific but those that are untestable are not. He declares, â€Å" I have come to a conclusion that Darwinism is not testable scientific theory but a metaphysical research program, a plausible framework for testable scientific theories†. Debate among some scientists and philosophers of science on the applicability of falsifiabilty have been offered by some scientists: Richard Dawkins and J.B.S. Haldane both pointed out that if fossil rabbits were found in the Precarribean era, a time before most similarly complex life forms had evolved â€Å" that would completely blow evolution out of water†. Creationists have criticized the scientific evidence used to support evolution as being based on faulty assumptions and unjustified jumping to conclusions. These include: the fossil fuel record which has significant gaps that cast doubt on evolution the emergence of new species which has not been observed directly radiometric dating which is inaccurate due to an inappropriate reliance on assumption of uniformitarianism While creationists claim that the problems they point out represent significant ‘holes’ in evolutionary theory. Supporters of evolutionary theory respond by arguing that these gaps of knowledge do not cast doubt on the framework the theory of evolution provides, asserting that they indicate either areas where research needs to be directed or there is misunderstanding on the part of creationists. As a matter of fact scientists and subject experts of evolution, do not spend much time on refuting the charges of creationists. Many do not respond at all. They do not think it is worth it. After all, when they reply, creationists get the publicity. ( creation-evolution controversy ) Pope Benedict XVI , in a book titled â€Å" creation and evolution†, published on 11 April 2007, states that â€Å" The question is not to either make a decision for a creationism that fundamentally excludes science, or for an evolutionary theory that covers over its own gaps and does not want to see the questions that reach beyond the methodological possibilities of natural science. I find it important to underline that theory of evolution implies questions that must be to philosophy and which themselves lead beyond the realms of science. It is also true that the theory of evolution is not a complete, scientifically proven theory†. He believes that experiment in a controlled environment h as limitations, as, â€Å" We cannot have 10,000 generations into the laboratory†. He also does not endorse creationism or intelligent design. He defends ‘ theistic evolution’, a reconciliation between science and religion, already held by Catholics. He writes on evolution, as a ‘ process itself is rational despite the mistakes and confusion as it goes through a narrow corridor, choosing a few mutations and using low probability. This inevitably leads to a question that goes beyond science- where did this rationality come from ? † to which he answers that it comes from the ‘creative reason’ of God. ( creationism – evolution controversy) Third alternative The conflict and controversy over evolution and creationism can be resolved if a third alternative is adopted. If biology had followed Pasteur’s paradigm, instead of Darwin’s, and if the theory of cosmic ancestry was prevailing today, then the mechanical theory of nature would account for the evolutionary progress and the origin of life on Earth. There would be no need for supernatural intervention. Cosmic ancestry is fundamentally different from both Darwinism and prevailing western religions. Both hold that life arises and evolves from simpler beginnings. Darwinism explains this with material causes, western religions with supernatural causes. In Cosmic Ancestry life neither arises nor evolves to more highly organized forms from simpler beginnings. With material causes life can descend from prior life at least as highly evolved as itself. Thus in Cosmic Ancestry, life only descends. The fact is that neither science nor religion seem interested in adopting Cosmic Ancestry as an alternative. ( Evolution versus creationism) Conclusion The theory of evolution proves how life originated and developed on this Earth. It has a scientific base in all its claims. It is a result of careful analysis of data. All over the world it has been accepted as a ‘truly scientific explanation’ on evolution of life. It does not have to do anything with any supernatural power. Religious fundamentalists, specially Christian, have evolved a movement called ‘creationism’, which asserts that the theory of evolution tends to wipe off the Biblical teachings and the faith they have in God. Till today, the highest priest of Christianity, the Pope, is busy trying to find ‘holes’ in the theory of evolution, when the whole world has accepted this theory before 150 years. The paradox is that evolution has never touched upon the aspects of God. In fact, scientists also believe in God and accept His existence. Physics You can find a law of physics in everything that you do. It does not matter if you are doing complex scientific experiments, working as a laborer in a field, or enjoying your favorite pastime, you are involved in putting the laws of physics to work. I will try to demonstrate this as I discuss the laws of physics that are involved in my favorite pastime, which is steer wrestling. The art of steer wrestling is complex and simple all at the same time. To start, let’s define what exactly steer wrestling is. Steer wrestling is a rodeo event that is also known as bull dogging. This is the event where there are two mounted cowboys that run along the side of a steer. When they get close to the steer the cowboy on the left hand side climbs off onto the back of the steer, grabbing the steer by the horns. Keep in mind if you will that both the cowboys on the horses and the steer are running at full speeds while this dismounting is taking place. Once the cowboy has the steer by the horns, the cowboy must change the steer’s direction and wrestle him to the ground. Since this is a rodeo event and a competition, you have to do all of the above as fast as you can. Steer wrestling is a timed event that is started when the steer leaves the chute, and ends when the steer is lying on its side with all four feet facing the same direction. Now that we know what steer wrestling is, let’s tie it in with a couple of things that deal with physics. As I already mentioned above, the first step is crawling off of a horse that is running full speed onto the back of a cow that is traveling at its full speed as well. Any time you have masses traveling at speeds you have momentum. I believe that the use and understanding of physics can help in understanding why things work better then others, and how to be a more successful steer wrestler. The next day at school, Mr. John McPherson shows up under the influence of alcohol, completely drunk and starts to insult the Jews and making extremely racist comments. This is Just a small example of Anti-Semitism during Duddys childhood. Another idea I found important in the text was selfishness as well as ambition and greed. Even though Duddy was making more money than a 17 year old should, he always wanted more.Nothing was more important to him than making money. When he heard that the last piece of land in Lac St. Pierre was up for sale, he took all the money he had, but still came up short. Duddy decides to forge a cheque from Virgil's chequebook. Virgil was a man who Duddy met in New York and helped him make money illegally by smuggling pinball machines. After Virgil and Yvette found out about what Duddy had done to them, they never spoke to him again. Discuss the author's style. Describe 2 iterary elements the author uses successfully and give a clear example of each. The author used a few techniques to deepen our understanding of the story. One of the techniques was using a teenager as the main character of the novel. I think this showed us the ambition of the young man because all teenagers want to make money and dream about becoming rich one day, but it's not all 17 year olds that want it as bad as Duddy Kravitz. Another technique used by the author was making the main character a Jew.As we all know, Jews have a reputation for wanting money so ad and I think that the fact that Duddy is Jewish makes the whole story about a young man chasing money more meaningful. I enjoyed this novel a lot and recommend it to everyone living in Montreal and who likes a story that may have many things in common with their own personal lives.
