It has been heard and talked about throughout history, that there was never such a thing as "The" Ku Klux Klan. There is traceable evidence of different movements and organizations that have used this name. The history of the K.K.K. corresponds with the history of race relations from our country. The Klan can be divided into five different eras: The Reconstruction, The End of the War (& Pulaski Six), The Klan Mobilization, The Reign of Terror, and The End of the First Era. Each stage was brought out by economic and social changes. Each stage also is at the same point in time as an escalation in racial standings. As it was started in 1865, the Ku Klux Klan has sent a sense of terror through people’s minds. A group of six white Southerners was the start of this organization. The history of violence of the K.K.K. is a result of the hatred and anger from the end of the Civil War. The reason for this hatred was because blacks had won their struggle for freedom of slavery. They fought to deny the civil rights for African Americans. They wanted the blacks to be forced into slavery once again. The K.K.K. tore apart reconstructing governments and established a reign of terror and violence throughout the whole war-torn South. The first era of the K.K.K. lasted about three or four years, than faded. The arose again after World War 1. The overall story starts with many generations of Americans learning hard lessons of life. These experiences led to fierce individualism, surprising inventiveness, and the thought that they could be whatever and go wherever they wanted to. Other things occurred alon g with these thoughts. "Frontier Justice" was an instant, private and violent method of settling differences without law officials. This was a large component to the motivation of the Ku Klux Klan. To some whites the freedom of slaves meant that their social and economic ways of life had been defeated. For some white Southerners, this was a nightmare that came true. The number of slaves living around the whites were seen as threats. Night patrols were a result of bloody slave revolts. These patrols consisted of white men that were empowered and authorized by law to look enforce a curfew for slaves, look for runaways and guard rural areas. This was done to prevent any black rebellions. These patrollers were given the right to whip any violators they caught.

Comment on the Three Conditions on Market Efficiency

An efficient capital market is one in which stock prices fully reflect available information. Professor Andrei Shleifer has suggested three conditions lead to market efficiency. (1)rationality, (2)independent deviations from rationality, and (3)arbitrage. This essay will examine investors’ behavioral biases and then discuss the behavioral and empirical challenges to market efficiency. In the attached article, James Montier suggested three behavioral biases that investors had. (1) illusion of control, (2)self-attribution, and (3)over-confident. Illusion of control means people fell they are in control of a situation far more than they are.Self-attribution means good outcomes are contributed to their skill while bad outcomes are contributed to external, such as back luck. These two biases lead people to be over-optimistic and exaggerate their own abilities. People are always over-confident as well. They always think they are smarter and have better information than they actually do. These three behavioral biases form a potential combination and lead investors to overestimate their ability and knowledge and understate the risks. In reality, there are some other behavioral biases. Investors usually prefer to put their money into a company that they know or familiar with.This is known as familiarity bias. They will invest heavily in the company they work for. They will also allocate a larger fraction of their investments to domestic stock even though it is easier to diversify investments across geographies. In addition, people tend to perceive probabilities and resonate with their own pre-existing ideas even though the conclusions drawn are statistically invalid. And this is called representativeness. The next bias exists in reality is conservatism, it means that people are too slow in adjusting their beliefs to new information.They clings to prior views or forecasts at the expense of acknowledging new information. The last bias I want to mention is herd beha vior. This is a tendency for individuals to mimic the actions(rational or irrational) of a larger group. It may comes from social pressure of conformity and/or believing the larger group knows something that they don’t. Most of the above-mentioned behavioral biases contradict Professor Andrei Shleifer’s three conditions for market efficiency. One of the conditions he suggested was rational.People will adjust their estimates of stock prices in a rational way after new information is released in the marketplace. Are people really rational? Not always. People will exert familiarity bias. They will be too favor the investments in companies they are familiar with. Tendency by investors to invest in domestic stock or the companies they work for. They do not achieve the degree of diversification that they can easily achieve. Others are over-confident and over-optimistic to believe they can pick winners and losers when, in fact, they cannot; this leads them to trade too much, generating both commissions and taxes.The behavioral view is that not all investors are irrational. Rather, it is some, perhaps many, investors are. Independent deviation from rationality was the second condition for market efficiency suggested by Andrei Shleifer. However, psychologists have long argued that people deviate from rationality in accordance with a number of basic principles. Some of them can apply to finance and market efficiency. One of the most examples in recent memory would be the bursting of the internet bubble. The behavior bias, representativeness can be used to explain this phenomenal.People perceive their pre-existing idea and draw conclusions from insufficient data. They saw a short history of high revenue growth and extrapolate that it will continue forever. Another behavior bias to explain internet bubble is herd behavior. Investors face pressure of conformity and trust large group irrationally. Result into a tendency for individuals to mimic the actions of a larger group that contributed to Internet bubble as well. Another behavior bias contradict independent deviations from rationality is conservatism. People are too slow in adjusting their beliefs to new information.In 2005, Kolasinski and Li have done a research by ranking companies by the extent of their earnings surprise. They found that prices adjust slowly to the earning announcements with the portfolio with the positive surprises outperforming the portfolio with the negative surprises. Behavioral finance suggests that investors exhibit conservatism. Professor Andrei Shleifer suggests that domination of rational professional will carry the stock meet its efficient prices by simultaneous purchasing and selling of misprice stock. However, in a world of many irrational amateurs and a few professionals, prices would not adjust to correct level.The risk of further mispricing may reduce the size of arbitrage strategies. In 1907, Royal Dutch Petroleum and Shell Transport merge interes t and split the cash flow in a 60/40 basis. However, empirical finding shows that two parties have rarely traded at parity (60/40) over the 1962 to 2004 period. Deviation from parity could increase in the short run, implying losses for the arbitrageur. There are also a numbers of empirical challenges to market efficiency. Therefore, we may expect those behavioral and empirical challenges discussed above may hold in all counties or market setting.

Images and stereotypes of the Native Americans were indelibly etched into the minds of the Europeans and we struggle today to eradicate these harmful portrayals. When Columbus arrived in the Caribbean in 1492, he was greeted by the natives of what is currently Haiti and the Dominican Republic, on the island of Hispaniola. These people were the Taino Indians, who belong to the general group Arawak, which primarily describes the common language shared by the native people†¦show more content†¦They built two basic styles of housing; one for the general populace and another for the caciques. Ordinary people lived in dwellings somewhat similar to North American teepees, circular buildings with a central pole. The major difference was that they did not use animal skins for shelter, but instead used straw and palm leaves. Brainstorming is a method students can use to generate ideas for writing a paper. In the process of brainstorming, you should suspend any concerns about staying organized. The goal is to pour your thoughts onto paper without worrying about whether they make sense or how they fit together. Because students have different learning styles, some students will be uncomfortable with the disorganized frenzy of spilling thoughts onto paper. For instance, left brain  dominant  students and sequential thinking students may not benefit from the process if it becomes too cluttered. There are more organized ways to brainstorm, however. For this reason, we’ll explore a few ways to get the same results. Find the one that feels most comfortable to you. Brainstorming for Right Brains Right-brained thinkers are typically comfortable with a variety of shapes, ideas, and patterns. Right brains dont run from chaos. The artistic side of the right brain enjoys the process of creating--and it doesnt really matter whether they start with cluttered ideas or clumps of clay. The right brain may be most comfortable with clustering or mind mapping as a brainstorming method. To get started, you will need a few clean pieces of paper, some tape, and a few colored pens or highlighters. Write your main idea or topic in the middle of the paper.Start writing down thoughts in no particular pattern. Write words or passages that pertain to your main idea in some way.Once youve exhausted the random thoughts that come into your head, start using prompters like who, what, where, when, and why. Do any of these prompters generate more words and ideas?Consider whether prompters like opposites or comparisons would be relevant to your topic.Dont worry about repeating yourself. Since 1945, an estimated 1. 2 billion hectares of land worldwide have been moderately or strongly degraded as a result of human activity, implying that its productivity has been significantly reduced. Human activities can produce a diverse range of both harmful and beneficial impacts on the quality of land. Agriculture is one example; whilst it can lead to soil erosion, salination of soils through irrigation, and nutrient depletion, on the other hand it may also act as a sink for greenhouse gases, and prevent flooding and landslides if good management practices are applied. The effects on the environment of land use are usually complex especially in a country like Mauritius where agricultural practices are confined to mono culture dominance: e. g. sugar cane. Mauritius is a densely populated small island developing state with a limited high quality area of land (out of total area of 185,000 ha) suitable for effective development. This natural resource is therefore, under high pressure due to increasing demand for development by the various sectors of the economy. Mauritius is one of the most densely populated, agricultural islands in the world having 16% built-up space and growing at a rate of 1000 ha of residential space every year. The island of Mauritius covers some 186 500 ha of land of which 43% or 84 000 ha is estimated to be under agriculture. Of this proportion, some 77 000 ha or 39% of total land mass is under sugar cane. Focus on the following policies; have been emphasized in the future land management strategies: †¢ Judicious use of land by avoiding incompatible land uses. †¢ Awareness on self-regulating measures by different land demanding authorities †¢ Well planned strategy on tourism development in light of limited eco-tourist landscape and coastal land resource. Adoption of principle of common sharing amongst all utility authorities and to provide different services in a rational manner. Tourism Sector – Hotels Construction Tourism, third pillar of the economy after the E. P. Z. manufacturing sector and Agriculture, contributes significantly to economic growth and has been a key factor in the overall development of Mauritius. In the past two decades tourist arrivals increased at an average annual rate of 9 % with a corresponding increase of about 21% in tourism receipts. In 2000, gross tourism receipts were 14. 2 billion rupees (508. 3 million US $) and contributed to about 11 % of our GDP. The National Tourism Policy emphasizes low impact, high spending tourism. Selective, up-market, quality tourism is favoured, and although such tourism is not the only type, it constitutes the major segment of our tourists who stay in high class hotels. In 1997, there were 87 hotels with a total capacity of 6,800 rooms and 14,100 bedplates. With the construction of new hotels, this will facilitate accommodation of new visitors, thus creating new employments Integrated Resort Scheme: A good example of innovative thinking on the part of policy makers in Mauritius was the introduction of the Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS) a few years ago. Under this scheme, non-Mauritian individuals or companies are entitled to purchase luxury villas and other residential properties on the island. The property owners then receive a residence permit (and consequently the tax benefits associated with living in Mauritius). Properties under this scheme are sold at a minimum price of USD 500 000. Aside from the injection of foreign capital and the immigration of skilled business people to Mauritius, the programme has provided a very welcome boost to the construction industry (and consequently employment) in the country. According to Sewraj Nundlall, assistant director, of Manufacturing Agri-Business Energy and Environment at the Board of Investment of Mauritius (BOI), 20 projects with an investment potential of around Rs 100 billion have already been approved. International property developers from UK, South Africa, and France have been investing in the projects and over 300 villas have already been sold out. The majority of the buyers come from France, UK, India and South Africa. One company which has very successfully marketed properties under this scheme is Pam Golding Properties. Jonathan Tagg, managing director of Pam Golding Properties in Mauritius says, the first IRS [the Tamarina Golf Estate and Beach Club development] is sold out. We are currently involved with an IRS development called Matala and with villas starting at USD 850 000 we have seen good sales and we expect that should take around one year to be sold out. When questioned about the effects of the global economic crisis on sales he said the market has slowed down from the highs of 2007 and early 2008 but we continue to see clients investing in Mauritius where there is little supply and property prices continue to climb. We feel the market will take another 18 months to two years to reach the highs of 2004 2007 where sales moved very quickly but we are optimistic that sales will continue to be steady. The IRS has been so successful that the government has innovated further and subsequently introduced the Real Estate Scheme, which unlike other government schemes designed to encourage inward investment, sets no minimum purchase price for foreign buyers. Agricultural Sector At the time of independence in 1968, Mauritius inherited a monocrop economy based on sugarcane. The country had to spend a large part of the revenue obtained from the export of sugar to import its food requirements, mainly rice, flour, pulses, chicken, beef, onions and milk products. However, apart from flour, all the other food items mentioned could be produced partly or even totally in Mauritius. Thus, imports could be reduced and foreign exchange saved. For this reason, the government decided to diversity our agriculture. Agricultural diversification in Mauritius Agriculture diversification means: producing crops and livestock that were not being produced so far †¢ producing crops and livestock, other than the main ones in larger quantities. In Mauritius, the government decided that diversification should not be at the expense of sugarcane, i. e. sugarcane should not be replaced, even partly. But other crops such as potatoes and maize and livestock should be produced in larger quantities and new crops introduced (e. g. anthurium). The government offered a number of ince ntives to farmers to ensure the success of the diversification programme: †¢ agricultural credit, i. e. inancial loans from bank †¢ a subsidy on the price of certain commodities †¢ a guaranteed price was offered for some commodities †¢ facilities were made available to livestock breeders. After nearly 20 years, it can be said that Mauritius has succeeded in a certain measure in its diversification program. Today the country is more than 33 % self-sufficient in its food requirements. Mauritius has derived many advantages from its agricultural diversification programs. These advantages are: †¢ imports have been reduced and foreign currencies saved †¢ employment has been created our dependence on sugar has been reduced †¢ the country has become self-sufficient in certain commodities †¢ new crops help to earn additional foreign currencies. When a country depends too much on one single crop, it runs certain risks. If the crop is severely affected b y adverse weather conditions, pests and diseases or low market prices, the country may face an economical crisis. RENEWABLE ENERGY Shifting to renewable energy is becoming more more important for Mauritius as we are very much dependent on imported petroleum products. As per latest statistics (Source – www. gov. mu ) in year 2007 Mauritius produced 82% of its energy from Petroleum products or coal which are imported. This has a very heavy burden on the Mauritian Economy as very high imports of fuel have a negative effect on the Balance of Trade. Moreover, as the international reserves in petroleum products is expected to be depleted in a few decades, the price of petroleum products is expected to rise drastically in the future predicting more and more pressure on the Mauritian economy. Apart from the economic aspects, there is also the ecological issue, we are all concerned with global warming and its consequences, being an island Mauritius is amongst the first countries affected by the rising sea level. All the above concerns have made the Mauritian Government engage in increasing the share of renewable and local sources in our energy production. Bagasse energy With the help of incentives from the Government, the Sugarcane industry has engaged in the diversification of its activities to use bagasse together with coal for the cogeneration of electricity. There has been the centralisation of activities to a few major factories who use bagasse and coal for energy production , theses units have an agreement with the Central Electricity Board which allows them to sell all energy produced in excess of their own use to the CEB at a predefined rate. The firms in the sugarcane industry are allowed to raise tax free debentures for the generation of electricity from bagasse and the modernisation of their factories. These firms who invested in such systems were entitled to refund of export duty payable. All these incentives have increased production of electricity with bagasse making it the number one source of local and renewable energy at nearly 17% of electricity production in 2007. The action plan for 2006 to 2015 (Source – Sugarcane for energy production in the future by Dr G Rajpati, Executive Director, Mauritius Sugar Authority, July 2006) is to fully tap the energy potential of the sugarcane plant. This includes doubling the production of electricity from bagasse from 300 GWh to 600 GWh, for this research is being carried out for the production of higher fibre cane.

Well, its finally here. After an entire summer filled with its reality TV show, Rock Star Supernova released their debut album. All the ingredients are correct rock veterans Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke, and Jason Newsted and their hand-picked singer, Lukas Rossi, who has a distinct style. Its a great combination. So can someone please explain why this is a train wreck? The album starts with â€Å"Its On.† Good title, it hints at some sort of fighting anthem where skulls are a crackin. The instruments are pretty solid and relatively fast, but the vocals are just Rossi howling for three minutes. During the TV show, he was criticized for not having enough range. Well, apparently he wants to prove he does. â€Å"Leave the Lights On† debuted on the TV show and was sung by a female contestant so hearing the official version is a hard adjustment. Rossi is essentially talking, but manages to shine during the chorus. His voice is layered by weird voices and its over-stylized. But my biggest gripe with the album? Gilby Clarkes self-indulgent guitar solos. Ushered in by â€Å"Its All Love,† Rossi starts to sound like the man the audiences loved over the summer. The song crawls along but has a catchy tune and Rossis signature sound gives it an edge wait! Guitar solo. Okay, continue. â€Å"Cant Bring Myself to Light This Fuse† is a disaster. Rossi sounds like a little girl, the piano is almost as laughable as Rossis voice, and the lyrics are pathetic. Can this really come from a band that has members of Metallica in it? They picked a good song to follow that disaster â€Å"Underdog.† Clarke is trying to steal the show, of course, and its hard to pick out the surprisingly great bass line. Lees drumming is pretty unremarkable but here Rossi is amazing. He shows his gritty side and is able to swing into a high register seamlessly without sounding ridiculous. The saving grace of the entire album is â€Å"Social Disgrace,† for which Clarke actually gets some props for having an exquisite guitar riff. Rossi employs the same vocal tactic as â€Å"Underdog,† where he sings low then swings into a higher voice, showing that hes not just a gruff mumble-mouth like he was on the show. Rejoice SNL lovers, Lee gives us more cowbell! Its a little odd, but the bell does make an impression. Then comes the slap in the face. For some reason, a church choir starts singing on the last song. Why theyre there is anyones guess because the song is called â€Å"The Dead Parade† and is about people who go their own way. Dumb lyrics return, with a melodramatic wailing of â€Å"my life is a roller coaster!† Shut up. Clarke remembers that its the last song on the album, so he smashes on for a minute of extra nonsense. Rossi sounds good despite the moronic lyrics, and Lee does a great job, just like on every other song on the album. â€Å"Rock Star Supernova† is one of those albums that must be listened to several times for the artistry to be appreciated. At face value, it sounds like some commercial romp for a bunch of has-been rockers and one guy who desperately wants to be rich and famous. But in a society that worships fast food and fast cash, who has time to listen to the same thing over and over again just to start liking it?
